MJB Holistic provides psychiatric medication management for Maryland, DC, and Georgia residents via secure telehealth, plus in-person care at our Upper Marlboro, MD office. Care is delivered by Melveena Johnson-Bolden, PMHNP-BC — a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
Medication management is the most common reason people see us. Whether you are starting psychiatric medication for the first time, switching from another prescriber, or refining a regimen that's been around for years, the goal is the same: find a plan that does what you need it to do, with as few side effects as possible, and check in on it regularly enough to keep it working.
What Medication Management Looks Like Here
Psychiatric medication management is more than writing prescriptions. It includes:
A careful initial evaluation — symptoms, history, prior medications, medical conditions, substances, and what you actually want from treatment
Discussion of the realistic options, including non-medication alternatives
Conservative prescribing — starting at sensible doses, not adding medications without reason
Ongoing follow-up to assess response, side effects, and adjustments
Coordination with your therapist and primary care provider
Plain-language explanations of what each medication is for, what to expect, and what to watch out for
Conditions We Manage Medication For
We provide medication management for the major conditions seen in adult psychiatric care:
Anxiety disorders — generalized anxiety, panic, social anxiety
Depression and depressive disorders
Bipolar disorder and mood instability
PTSD and trauma-related conditions
Schizophrenia and psychotic-spectrum conditions
ADHD / ADD
Sleep disruption (when psychiatric)
Co-occurring substance use disorders
How Often We Meet
We work to meet at a frequency that works best for each client. It's common to meet every 4 weeks at the start of a new medication or after a change, then every 1-3 months once you're stable. We adjust based on how things are going, what side effects come up, and what fits your life.
Coordinated Care
Medication works best when the prescriber and the therapist are on the same team. With your consent, we coordinate with:
Your therapist (we can also help you find one)
Your primary care provider for medical conditions and medication interactions
Other specialists involved in your care
A Note on Controlled Substances
Some psychiatric medications are controlled substances. State and federal rules govern when these can be prescribed via telehealth and when an in-person visit is required. We will tell you up front what applies to your specific situation. If your treatment requires something we cannot safely deliver via telehealth, we will say so and help you find the right setting.

Frequently Asked Questions
I have been taking [medication] for years. Can you just continue it?
Often, yes — once we have done an initial evaluation and reviewed records. We do not change long-standing regimens that are working without good reason.
Do you take new patients on stimulants or benzodiazepines?
We evaluate every situation individually. We're conservative with controlled substances but we are not opposed to them when they are clinically appropriate and there is a clear risk-benefit case.
Can I do all my visits by telehealth?
For most medications, yes. For some controlled substances and some clinical situations, an in-person visit is required by law or by what's clinically appropriate. We will tell you what applies.
Can I taper off a medication I am on?
Often yes, when it's the right time. Tapering is usually slower than people expect — we typically do it gradually with check-ins to monitor for return of symptoms or withdrawal.
How do I switch my prescriber to MJB Holistic?
Schedule an initial evaluation. Bring or send your medication list and recent records when possible. We will review and continue, adjust, or change in collaboration with you — not before talking it through.
