Anger that comes too fast, too big, or too often isn't a moral failure — it's almost always a signal. Something is overwhelming your nervous system, and the anger is what's coming out. Maybe you grew up around it. Maybe you're under pressure that hasn't let up. Maybe there's an underlying condition — depression, ADHD, trauma, anxiety — feeding the explosions. At MJB Holistic & Therapeutic Services in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, we help patients understand and treat anger by addressing what's underneath. We treat the whole client, and not the hole in the client.
When anger becomes a problem worth treating
Some anger is healthy — it tells you a boundary has been crossed. The kind of anger we treat is different. It's the anger that:
Damages your relationships with partners, family, or coworkers
Comes on faster and bigger than the situation calls for
Leaves you feeling guilty, ashamed, or out of control afterward
Has cost you jobs, friends, or custody
Has led to physical aggression or near-aggression
Has been flagged by a court, employer, or family member as needing treatment
Coexists with anxiety, depression, ADHD, or trauma symptoms
Feels impossible to explain — sometimes you don't even know why you're so angry
What's actually underneath
Anger almost never travels alone. The patients we see for anger management commonly also have:
Untreated depression (especially common in men, where depression often shows up as irritability instead of sadness)
ADHD — emotional dysregulation is a core feature
PTSD or unresolved trauma
Chronic anxiety — always on edge
Substance use that lowers inhibition
Sleep deprivation
Hormonal or thyroid issues
Pain — physical or emotional — that hasn't been addressed
Effective anger treatment usually means treating what's underneath, not just the anger itself.
Our approach to anger management
Melveena Johnson-Bolden, PMHNP-BC, brings 28 years of nursing experience and a person-centered approach to anger treatment. We won't lecture you or shame you. We'll help you understand what's driving the anger and build a plan to address it.
Anger management treatment at MJB typically includes:
A thorough psychiatric evaluation to identify what's underneath the anger
Medication management when an underlying condition (depression, ADHD, anxiety, PTSD) is contributing
Coordination with therapists for cognitive-behavioral or trauma-focused therapy when that's part of your plan
Pharmacogenetic testing if previous medications haven't worked
Practical regulation tools you can use in real time when anger surges
Ongoing follow-up so we can adjust as you improve
Medications and pharmacogenetic testing
If medication is part of your plan, MJB Holistic offers in-house pharmacogenetic testing — a simple test that helps your provider tailor psychiatric medications to your specific body chemistry. Patients who use pharmacogenetic testing are roughly 2.5 times more likely to achieve remission, with fewer side effects and fewer trial-and-error medication switches. The test is often free for patients depending on insurance, with results in 3 to 5 business days. Learn more on our pharmacogenetic testing page at mjbholistic.com/genetic-testing.
Court-ordered or employer-required care
If you're seeking anger management care because of a court order, employer requirement, family request, or custody situation, we can provide documentation of treatment as needed (within HIPAA boundaries). Treatment is voluntary and confidential — we don't share information without your written consent.
What to expect at your first visit
First appointments are 60 minutes. We'll talk through what's been going on, what triggers the anger, how it shows up, what's worked and what hasn't, and what you want to be different. You will not be judged. The goal is to help you have the kind of life and relationships you want.
Frequently asked questions about anger management
Do you offer group anger management classes?
We don't currently run formal anger management groups in-house. We offer one-on-one psychiatric care and coordinate with group programs in the community when group work is part of your plan.
Can medication actually help with anger?
Yes — when there's an underlying treatable condition. Antidepressants help when irritability is part of depression. Stimulants or non-stimulants help when ADHD-related dysregulation is the issue. Trauma-focused medications help when PTSD is contributing. Mood stabilizers help when bipolar irritability is the cause. The right medication depends on what's driving the anger.
Will I lose my edge or my drive?
No. The goal is to remove the unhelpful anger — the kind that hijacks your decision-making and damages your relationships — not the healthy assertiveness that helps you get things done.
Is this confidential? Will my employer or court find out?
All psychiatric care is confidential under HIPAA. We share information only with your written permission. If a court or employer requires documentation, we can provide it — but only what you authorize and only what's relevant.
How quickly will I see improvement?
If medication is part of your plan, most patients notice improvement within 2 to 6 weeks. Building lasting regulation skills takes longer — typically 3 to 6 months of consistent work.
